Getting started

How do I create a training plan?

After Ultra's onboarding questions, open the Plan tab and pick what you are preparing: 5K to marathon, an ultra, my first ultra, backyard or elimination laps, or just build fitness. Enter the race name, date, distance and elevation gain, and the plan is built backwards from race day in phases: base, build, peak, taper, race.

What does UltraTrain read from Apple Health?

Heart rate, workouts, running distance and calories, only for the data types you allow. They calibrate your plan, your rank and your finish time prediction. You can change access anytime in iOS Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You create one during onboarding with Sign in with Apple or an email address. The account links your subscription, keeps your races and rank in sync across your devices, and powers Strava and referrals. Your runs and health data stay on your device and in your private iCloud.

Rank and XP

What is the rank?

One universal ladder with seven tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Ultra Legend) and three divisions per tier. It mixes two things: your level score, from 0 to 1000, computed from your real results on a scale anchored like ITRA's, and your XP, earned with the training you actually do. Diamond and above need at least one ultra result in your history.

How do I earn XP?

10 XP per equivalent kilometre run (km + elevation gain / 100), +50 for a planned session completed, +20 for a planned rest day validated, x2 on a session with a verified live photo, +1 000 for a race finished (your level is recomputed too), and +100, +300 and +1 000 at 7, 30 and 100 days of streak. Kilometres beyond 120% of your planned weekly volume earn nothing, so the rank never rewards overtraining. Each run earns XP once, whether it arrives from the watch, Apple Health or Strava.

Can my rank go down?

Like real fitness, yes, gently. Taper weeks, recovery weeks and validated rest days cost nothing. After two weeks without running and no reason given, your level score drops about 1% per week, at most 10%, and recovers with training. After ten days without activity, your division progress drains about 2% per day, with at most one division lost every two weeks. If you mark yourself sick or injured, the drain runs at half speed and you get an XP x1.5 comeback boost for four weeks when you return. The rank never drops below the tier your level score gives you.

Why does Ultra ask me about new performances?

When your rank runs more than a tier ahead of your level, or your level has not changed in three months, Ultra asks after a sync whether you have a new PR or a new long performance. Say yes and your level updates. Say no and XP slows down until a result confirms the rank. At most once every four weeks, and "Not now" is always there.

Streak and freezes

How does the daily streak work?

A day counts when you complete the planned session or validate the planned rest day. Rest is part of training, so validating it keeps the streak alive. An unplanned run on a rest day earns nothing extra. A missed session breaks the streak unless a freeze covers it.

What are streak freezes?

A freeze saves one missed day. You earn one every 7 days in a row and can hold at most 2. They are never bought with XP. Marking yourself sick or injured freezes those days automatically without using a held freeze.

Ultra proof

Why does the app ask for proof of an ultra?

Diamond and above need one ultra result. Most of the time nothing to do: an ultra in your synced history (watch, Apple Health, Strava), a race planned in the app with its result entered, or an ITRA or UTMB index counts automatically. Otherwise you can paste the official results link, send a screenshot or photo (a watch or Strava activity, a results page, a finisher certificate), or simply declare it. A declared ultra that is realistic against your other results unlocks Diamond on trust. Proof is a shortcut, never a requirement.

What happens to my screenshot?

Our server sends it to OpenAI's vision model to check that it shows an ultra, that the distance and time match what you declared, and that the name matches your profile when one is visible. The image is then deleted. We keep only a perceptual hash (a fingerprint that cannot be turned back into the picture) and the verdict, so the same image cannot be reused on another account. Results links are fetched by our server to check that your name and time appear on the page.

Share overlays

What are share overlays?

Twenty-nine templates drawn from your run's data: the GPS trace, the climb, the splits, the summit, a finisher medal on race day, a tally for backyards. Pick one after a run, add your photo or keep it transparent, and export as a story, a square post or a transparent sticker for Instagram. The only branding is a small ULTRATRAIN word. No rank, XP or mascot on your photos.

Do overlays show where I live?

No. Every overlay keeps a 300 m privacy zone around your start and your finish, like Strava's privacy zones. Nothing is drawn, printed or geocoded inside those zones, and runs shorter than 1.5 km never show a trace.

Training plans

What is the "My first ultra" plan?

A 0-to-ultra plan: from your current running base to a first 50K, 60K, 80K or 100K, with minimum timelines for safety. When it ends, Ultra invites you to pick a real race. Adding it generates a race plan, and your rank, XP, streak and history carry over.

How do backyard and elimination plans work?

In a backyard ultra you run a 6.7 km loop every hour until one runner is left. In an elimination race, the last runner of each lap is out. The pace is imposed, so the goal is counted in loops or laps, not kilometres. The plan builds the endurance to hold that pace for hours, the app estimates how many loops you can hold from your speed and endurance, and the race tier comes from loops too.

How does the plan adjust when I miss sessions?

Skip a session and tell Ultra why. A single miss changes nothing: you are not asked to make it up. Illness eases the rest of the week. A pattern over two or three weeks, or four skips in three weeks, triggers a rebalance of the whole plan. After a long break, the plan rebuilds volume before intensity.

Can I add intermediate (B/C) races?

Yes. Add B or C races in the Race screen. The plan inserts a 3 to 5 day mini-taper before and 3 to 7 days of recovery after, and uses the result as a benchmark for your A-race prediction and your rank.

What is the recovery week cycle?

Every 3rd or 4th week eases volume to roughly 80 to 85% of the previous load week, the 2:1 or 3:1 build-to-recovery cycle used by most ultra coaches. Taper and recovery weeks never cost rank progress.

Race-day fuelling

Where did the nutrition tab go?

UltraTrain 2.0 removed the daily nutrition tab, the food log and food photo analysis. What stays is what matters on race day: your race fuelling plan (calories per hour, hydration, sodium) appears in the Race screen about four weeks before the race, and long runs carry a reminder to practice it so your stomach is trained before the start.

Run tracking

How accurate is GPS tracking?

During a run the app uses your phone's best GPS accuracy with a 5 m distance filter. Accuracy depends on your device, satellite visibility and terrain: expect less in deep valleys or dense forest.

Does tracking work without a signal?

Yes. GPS works without cellular or Wi-Fi. The run is stored on your device and synced when you are back online. The Apple Watch app records runs on its own too.

How does auto-pause work?

When your speed drops below 0.5 m/s for 5 seconds, the run pauses. It resumes above 0.8 m/s. The gap avoids on-off flicker at aid stations.

Finish time prediction

How is my finish time estimated?

From effort-based distance (every 100 m of elevation gain adds about 1 km of equivalent effort), your recent training and race results, and the race's own difficulty. You get three scenarios: optimistic, expected and conservative, and per-checkpoint splits when the course profile is known.

Why does my predicted time change?

It updates as you log runs and your fitness changes. More consistent volume usually lowers it; a long break raises it.

Subscription

How much does it cost, and can I cancel?

14.99 € per month or 49.99 € per year, bought in the app through the App Store. There is no free tier. Cancel anytime from Settings > your name > Subscriptions on your iPhone; you keep access until the end of the paid period. Reinstalled the app? Use Restore Purchases in the app's settings.

Account and data

How do I export my data?

Settings > Data Management > Export Training Data gives you a CSV of all your training data. Runs can be shared as images with the overlays.

How do I delete my data?

Settings > Account > Delete Account removes your account and all your server-side data (profile, races, rank, referral, proof hashes) within 30 days. Data in your private iCloud is yours: clear it from Settings > Data Management > Clear All Data, and remove the app's data from iCloud in iOS Settings if you want it gone there too. Your App Store subscription is managed by Apple and must be cancelled separately.

Does iCloud sync work across devices?

Yes. With iCloud enabled, your data syncs between your Apple devices signed into the same Apple ID through your private CloudKit container. Only you can read it.

Strava

How do I connect Strava?

Settings > Integrations > Strava > Connect. You authorise UltraTrain on Strava's site, then completed runs upload automatically and your Strava activities count for your plan, your rank and your XP (once each, never twice).

Can I import past Strava activities?

Yes. After connecting, UltraTrain imports your recent activities and can scan years back for ultras, which count as your ultra result for Diamond.
